SkyCab® the innovation
The project
SkyCab is working in an international network together with 15 cities, several R&D institutions and a complete industrial group. The aim of the SkyCab project is to supplement buses, (local) trains and subway trains with a convenient, cost effective and environmental friendly PRT.

The system
Travelers approaching a SkyCab station push a button on an electronic card programmed with various destinations. By the time passengers reach the station, their SkyCab is waiting. SkyCab is programmed to automatically travel through a network to reach the destination.

Line Capacity
The maximum practical link capacity is 2,500 pphpd, theoretically up to 9,000 pphpd at an operating speed of 36-km/hr.

Characteristics
Vehicles run on rubber tires with electric motors and on-board switches at speeds of up to 65km/hr. Standard SkyCabs seat 4 passengers and weigh under 1,000-kg. Special adjustable seating systems accommodate wheelchairs and packages. Each SkyCab is equipped with a console panel, an information display and a mobile telephone to allow communication with the control center. Guideways are typically 4-m above the ground.

Point synchronous (modified asynchronous) controls are used. Minimum turning radius is 20-m. Maximum gradient is 10 percent. There is radio/inductive cable communication.

Environmental friendly
Traffic contributes to large amounts of emissions, especially carbon dioxide, which leads to significant pollution. Important negative impacts on the environment are acidification, eutrophication, global warming, ground level ozone, diffusion of pollutant barriers, and noise.
SkyCab is a new and supplementary system for public transport. SkyCab strive to be an environmentally sound system already from the start. Vetenskapsstaden and the municipalities of Sigtuna and Linköping are interested in applying the system. Both Sigtuna and Linköping have a great deal of pollution due to traffic. Vetenskapsstaden, in Stockholm, is situated in an environmentally sensitive area. Globally, nationally and locally efforts has to be made to ensure a sustainable development. The ultimate objective of the UN framework convention on climate change is to achieve stabilisation of atmospheric greenhouse gases at levels that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human induced) interference with the climate system. Together with other countries, Sweden is responsible for ensuring that the global objective can be achieved. To achieve an ecological sustainable development Sweden has created 15 environmental quality objectives. A strategy to achieve the objectives is for example to create alternative transport systems to reduce emissions. Sigtuna, a municipality with ecological thinking, has developed own environmental objectives from the national quality objectives. Linköping uses Agenda 21 from the Rio convention as a guideline for a sustainable development. The objectives for the National City Park apply also to Vetenskapsstaden. The stages in the life cycle of SkyCab are production, use and disposal. Environmental aspects as energy, raw material, land, waste and natural and urban environment has been examined from a life cycle perspective to find out the impact from SkyCab and how it relates to the objectives.

De most important national environmental objectives for a new system for public transport:
  • Clean air
  • Zero eutrophication and natural acidification only
  • Reduced climate impact
  • A non-toxic environment
  • A good built environment
  • Biodiversity

Desired development in the transport sector:
  • Satisfying accessibility
  • Less traffic congestion
  • Cleaner air
  • Satisfying safety

Actions that helps to achieve global, national, and local environmental objects:
  • Reduce emissions
  • Efficient energy use
  • Wise management of natural resources
  • Limit interference with the natural and urban environment
  • Low noise levels
  • Awareness of ecological aspects

An important result of this study is that the amounts of carbon dioxide emission from a SkyCab vehicle is in comparison with a car up to 1 800 times lower. The conclusion is that SkyCab will help to achieve the environmental objectives.
